The city of La Chorrera, Panama will host the 26th Festival of Tambourines and Kites on Sunday, March 22. Organized by the Chinese Panamanian Professional Association (Aprochipa), this year’s event moves to the Costa Verde area near San Agustín College for a full day of family focused cultural activities.
Gates open at 10 a.m. with festivities continuing until 6 p.m. The festival aims to promote the traditional pastime of kite flying while strengthening community bonds. Attendees can expect competitions, stage performances, and a dedicated food corridor.
International Experts Join Local Celebrations
A significant new feature this year involves international participation. Six expert kite flyers from three separate Colombian groups will perform special exhibitions. They plan to showcase giant, elaborate kites as part of the aerial spectacle.
Association President María Gabriela Fong emphasized the event’s evolving nature. She highlighted the deliberate inclusion of international talent to elevate the experience for returning visitors and first time guests alike.
“This festival allows us to share and preserve a beautiful tradition that unites families,” Fong said. [Translated from Spanish] “The arrival of international experts enriches our cultural exchange and offers a unique visual show for everyone in attendance.”
Her comments underscore the event’s dual role. It functions as both a nostalgic community gathering and a dynamic platform for cross cultural connection.
Expanded Activities for Families and Pets
Beyond kite flying, organizers have planned a wide array of attractions. A pet adoption zone will operate throughout the day, allowing families to meet dogs seeking new homes. The entire festival grounds will be pet friendly, encouraging attendees to bring their own animals.
Safety preparations are also a key focus. Various security agencies, civil protection units, and ambulance services will be on site. This comprehensive support system ensures a secure environment for the anticipated large crowds.
These measures reflect the association’s commitment to a smooth, enjoyable event for all ages. The festival represents one of several cultural initiatives supported by Panama’s vibrant Chinese Panamanian community. Such events contribute to the nation’s diverse cultural calendar, similar to other large scale gatherings like the musicalion festival in the capital.
The simple Kite (aeronautics) serves as the festival’s central symbol. Its flight represents joy, tradition, and a shared focus on the sky, temporarily uniting everyone on the ground below.
Final logistics are now being coordinated. Volunteers and city workers will prepare the Costa Verde site in the days leading up to the event. Organizers expect several thousand people to attend this free, public celebration of spring and shared heritage.
