A single hectare of Panama\u2019s tangled mangrove forest can trap four times more carbon than a towering tropical forest on land, a biological superpower that turns these coastal wetlands into prized blue carbon vaults. On July 26, as the world marks the International Day for the Defense of the Mangrove ecosystem<\/a> and to recover mangroves, officials and communities are staring at a hard truth: the country has already lost roughly half of its original mangrove cover,<\/strong> and the race to save what remains is accelerating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The date honors environmental activist Hayhow Daniel Nanoto and was fixed by UNESCO in 2015, but for Panama, this year\u2019s commemoration arrives under the shadow of a 50-year decline. Roughly 50 percent of mangroves vanished since the mid-1970s, chewed away by agro-industrial expansion, unregulated real estate sprawl, and creeping pollution. That retreat doesn\u2019t just erase scenery. It punches a hole in the nation\u2019s ability to store carbon, blunt storm surges, and keep coastal ecosystems alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
