Launched in the mid-1990s by a small group of visionary producers, the event was designed to bring objective quality standards to farms that were already experimenting with the Geisha variety, a delicate Ethiopian landrace that had been largely dismissed elsewhere as low-yielding and finicky. The association behind the competition, the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP), shepherded the transformation from obscurity to worldwide obsession. Wilford Lamastus, one of the event’s founders, stood on the stage this year not just as a winning producer but as a living link to that history.

‘I am one of the founders,’ he said, his voice thick with emotion after accepting the top Geisha Washed award. ‘I feel happy with my team, my family, and my colleagues.’ [Translated from Spanish]

The competition’s 30th anniversary brought a reflective tone to the festivities, celebrating not just the current harvest but the generational knowledge transfer now taking root across Panamanian coffee country. Sons and daughters of the original pioneers are running estates, experimenting with fermentation techniques, and pushing the boundaries of what the Geisha cup profile can deliver. The Lamastus family’s Elida Estate, perched at dizzying altitudes above 1,800 meters, has become synonymous with intensely floral and tea-like expressions. The Petersons of Hacienda La Esmeralda, meanwhile, have cemented their status as specialty coffee royalty by claiming the Panama Cup, the competition’s highest aggregate honor, awarded to the producer accumulating the most points across all categories.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/DbifzNOO0Oz/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; The 2026 edition kicked off with 102 individual lots submitted by producers from across the Chiriquí highlands. Before any international judge even picked up a spoon, a national panel of producers and Panamanian specialists worked through each sample, checking that entries landed in the correct category, verifying processing methods, and making the initial quality cut. This first filter is designed to weed out coffees that, while potentially very good, lack the transcendent complexity needed to impress a global jury accustomed to scoring the world’s finest.

The coffees were split into three competitive lanes. Varietales covers everything that is not Geisha, a category that often highlights Bourbon, Caturra, and Pacamara varieties, showcasing the breadth of Panama’s genetic coffee library. The Geisha Natural category captures beans dried inside the coffee cherry, a method that can amplify berry-like, winey, and ferment-forward notes. Geisha Washed, the classic approach that many purists favor, strips the fruit before drying, resulting in a cleaner cup structure where delicate jasmine, bergamot, and stone fruit notes can sparkle without distraction. The decision to separate naturals from washed Geishas reflects the profound sensory divergence the processing method creates, essentially producing two entirely different beverages from the same genetic material.

Once the national panel completed its culling, the surviving lots faced an international jury of 46 official judges, supplemented by 49 guests, including 10 national pre-judges and 39 international observers. Countries represented around the cupping tables included Japan, China, Australia, the United States, Bulgaria, France, Canada, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. Additional tasters arrived from Singapore, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Kuwait, Vietnam, and Thailand. While their scores were not fed into the official tally, their presence underscored the commercial stakes involved. Many of these guests are buyers and roasters who will later bid in the electronic auction that follows the competition, a sale that regularly shatters price records and defines the upper limit of what specialty coffee can command.

The semifinal round saw judges blind-cup 16 Varietal samples, 24 Geisha Washed lots, and 24 Geisha Naturals. From that pool, only eight coffees in each category advanced to the final table. At that terminal stage, identities remained tightly guarded. Judges scored purely on what was in the cup, assigning points across fragrance, flavor, aftertaste, acidity, body, balance, and overall impression. The system rewards consistency and flawlessness, a standard that leaves no room for error. A single quarter-point differential, as Lamastus demonstrated, can separate first from second and carry enormous financial implications for the winning farm.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/Dbig3V3OjU-/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; Lamastus Family Estate’s winning 96.25 score was chased relentlessly by Finca Pergamino, owned by Yaneth de Lucich, which earned exactly 96.00 points. Hacienda La Esmeralda rounded out the top three with 95.25 points. In a room filled with farmers who have spent decades refining their craft, a margin this thin feels almost absurd, yet it perfectly illustrates the plateau of excellence Panama’s producers have reached. Wilford Lamastus captured this sentiment directly. ‘This is a key demanding competitions in the world,’ he noted. ‘The competitors are so good and with coffees just like ours. But a quarter point put us ahead and I am overjoyed.’ [Translated from Spanish]

In Geisha Natural, Finca Lérida claimed the crown with 95.63 points. The farm, under the direction of María Antonela Amoruso, produced a natural-processed Geisha that outshone Hacienda La Esmeralda, which secured second place with 95.50 points. Elida Estate, another Lamastus family property, took third with 95.25 points, proving the family’s dominance across multiple processing methods. The varietal category, often overlooked amid the Geisha frenzy, saw Altieri Specialty Coffee take first place with 93.63 points. The Altieri family has been a consistent force in Panama’s specialty scene, and their victory reinforced the message that exceptional coffee transcends variety alone. Hacienda La Esmeralda’s Panama Cup triumph, meanwhile, reflected a depth of excellence across all its submitted lots, a testament to the meticulous farming and processing protocols that have made the Peterson family name synonymous with quality.

The Global Auction and What Drives the Obsession

The Best of Panama is never just about trophies. The electronic auction that follows will see the winning lots, and many of the eight top finishers in each category, offered to a hungry international market. Buyers from Tokyo to Seoul to Dubai will bid aggressively, often paying hundreds of dollars per pound for the highest-scoring coffees. This auction mechanism, pioneered by SCAP, created the price discovery tool that revealed the latent demand for extraordinary coffee and gave producers the confidence to invest in ever more meticulous cultivation and processing. Panamanian Geisha regularly commands the highest prices in the world, breaking its own records year after year in a cycle that fuels reinvestment in the farms, worker welfare, and environmental stewardship.

The obsessive pursuit of cup quality has turned the Chiriquí highlands into a laboratory of innovation. Producers experiment with anaerobic fermentation, extended cold soaks, and precisely controlled drying environments to manipulate flavor compounds. Yet the fundamental magic traces back to the Panamanian terroir, a combination of volcanic soil, dramatic diurnal temperature swings, and cloud forest microclimates that stress the coffee plants just enough to concentrate sugars and aromatic precursors in the cherries. Add the Geisha variety’s inherently elongated seed shape and distinct phenolic profile, and the result is a cup that can taste like jasmine tea, ripe peach, and marmalade all at once. International judges at this year’s event, blind to the farm names, consistently rewarded those floral clarity and sweetness attributes, confirming that the sensory signature of Panamanian Geisha remains unmatched anywhere else in the world.

For the growing community of young producers entering the industry, watching parents and grandparents collect trophies and global acclaim provides a powerful incentive to carry on the tradition. The Lamastus family’s multi-generational presence on the winners’ platform, alongside the Petersons and the Amorusos, signals a healthy succession pipeline. In many coffee-growing regions, younger generations abandon agriculture for urban professions. Here, the prestige and extreme profitability of Geisha coffee have flipped that dynamic. Farming specialty coffee, especially at the top tier, represents an aspirational career path that combines agricultural science, sensory artistry, and international business. The 30th Best of Panama showed no signs of creative exhaustion. If anything, the competition suggested a community still pushing the frontier, seeking ever greater flavour clarity, complexity, and emotional impact in a humble cup of black liquid.

The quarter-point that separated Wilford Lamastus from his closest rival will likely translate into a substantial premium when the auction hammer falls. For the roasters and coffee shops that ultimately buy these lots, that tiny scoring gap becomes a powerful marketing story, a tale of the world’s best coffee winning by the smallest possible margin. The Best of Panama, thirty years on, continues to write those stories, binding a small Central American nation to the palates and pocketbooks of coffee connoisseurs on every continent, and securing a lasting legacy for the Geisha coffee champions who make the steep slopes of Boquete a place of pilgrimage for anyone who cares about what happens when plants, people, and passion converge at extraordinary altitudes.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/reel/Dbf2AEuBp41/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF;
