Dallas Pokornik, a 34-year-old former flight attendant from Toronto, pleaded guilty in U.S. district court in Honolulu to one count of wire fraud after authorities said he used forged airline credentials to access travel benefits reserved for pilots for nearly five years.

Court records filed in Hawaii describe a scheme that began in January 2020 and continued until October 2024. Pokornik, who had worked as a flight attendant for an unspecified Toronto-based airline from July 2017 to October 2019, allegedly presented a fake company identification badge to multiple U.S. carriers. Prosecutors said the badge claimed he still worked for the Canadian airline and allowed him to receive free tickets and cockpit jump seat access normally available only to active flight crew members.

How a Fake Pilot Exploited Airline Travel Benefits

Federal prosecutors said Pokornik used a “false and fictitious” identification badge to obtain travel perks from three unnamed U.S. airlines, including one based in Hawaii. The fraudulent benefits included airline tickets reserved for pilots and access to the cockpit jump seat, an extra seat used by commuting crew members and deadheading pilots. Jump seat agreements between airlines let pilots from other carriers ride in the cockpit when no passenger seats are available, but they require valid company identification and a pilot certificate.

The scheme went far beyond a few domestic trips. A social media account linked to Pokornik showed photos and videos from London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Phuket, Thailand, among other destinations. Until 2024, the account actively documented a life of global travel. One December 2023 post from London’s Heathrow Airport showed him rolling a carry-on suitcase while discussing married friends and hoping for a window seat. The jet-setting lifestyle apparently lasted for hundreds of flights across multiple airlines, according to prosecutors.

Homeland Security Investigations special agent in charge CJ Ammons said the case showed how someone could manipulate travel security protocols.

“This individual took advantage of travel security protocols for his own benefit and he will now face the consequences of his actions.”

Ammons made the statement in a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Hawaii following the guilty plea.

The Forged Badge and a Critical Employee Photo

The fake pilot scheme came apart after an employee at one of the U.S. airlines took a photograph of the fraudulent identification badge, according to the plea agreement. That photo was sent to Pokornik’s former employer, who confirmed the badge was not genuine. One glaring red flag stood out immediately, the badge listed an expiration date in 2027, years beyond what a legitimate employee credential from the Toronto-based airline would have shown at the time.

Investigators later determined that Pokornik never worked as a pilot for any Toronto-based airline. Airline staffing records showed he was a flight attendant, not a cockpit crew member. Among Canada’s major carriers, only Porter Airlines is headquartered in Toronto. A company spokesperson said in January 2026 that Porter could not verify any information to the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to name the Canadian airline in its public filings.

The case drew quick comparisons to the 2002 film Catch Me If You Can, in which Leonardo DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale Jr., a con artist who posed as a Pan American World Airways pilot. Abagnale’s story involved forged checks and elaborate identity fraud. Pokornik’s case involved fewer Hollywood theatrics, but aviation experts said the security implications are just as serious.

Arrest in Panama and Federal Wire Fraud Charges

Authorities arrested Pokornik in Panama and extradited him to the United States in January. He remained in federal custody before pleading guilty in Honolulu to a single count of wire fraud. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Pokornik also agreed to pay restitution to three U.S.-based victim airlines identified only as Airlines 1, 2, and 3 in court documents.

The plea agreement does not specify exactly how many free flights Pokornik took, but prosecutors said he obtained hundreds of flights over nearly five years. The fraudulent travel pattern apparently mirrored legitimate pilot commuting behavior, allowing him to move through airports without raising suspicion. His previous employment as a flight attendant likely gave him familiarity with crew travel procedures, security checkpoints, and airline badge formats.

Aviation management expert John Gradek from McGill University said Pokornik’s insider knowledge made the fraud harder to detect.

“This is not somebody off the street who doesn’t understand the business. This is somebody within the business. But even with all of that knowledge, at the end of the day, he still got caught.”

Gradek’s comments highlight a troubling reality for airline security teams, someone with legitimate industry experience can exploit that knowledge for extended periods.

Aviation Security Experts Call for Stronger ID Checks

Former pilot Dan Bubb, who flew for a regional airline in Las Vegas in the late 1990s, said the case should prompt airlines to tighten verification of crew credentials.

“But given a world of artificial intelligence and advanced technology, I think it’s kind of a wake-up call to all of us that people can manufacture authentic-looking IDs, which seems to be the case here.”

Bubb now teaches at the University of Nevada and noted that anyone accessing a jump seat must normally show the captain both a pilot’s licence and a valid company ID.

The security gap exposed by Pokornik’s scheme goes beyond one individual. Aviation industry insiders said pilots, gate agents, and flight crews may need more robust digital verification systems to catch forged badges. Modern printing technology and AI tools can create documents that look legitimate at a glance, especially if the person presenting them knows how crew travel works. Bubb predicted that cockpit crews will likely be more vigilant about checking credentials before allowing anyone into a jump seat.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DT0uJ1jjiSg/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; Pokornik allegedly used a badge that listed his old airline as a current employer, and no one caught the expiration date discrepancy until a random employee photographed the document. U.S. authorities have not said whether the three victim airlines ever contacted the Canadian carrier during the four years before the scheme was uncovered. The plea agreement suggests the fraud continued until the photo evidence finally linked the badge to Pokornik.

For now, the Toronto man’s globe-trotting days are over. He faces sentencing in Hawaii, where a federal judge will weigh the scale of the fraud, the restitution amount, and the breach of trust inherent in posing as a flight crew member. The case serves as a reminder that even sophisticated travel fraud can collapse with one observant employee and a single photograph.
