By contrast, the rest of the market, including Japanese, Korean, and American manufacturers, grew just 1.8 percent.

panama chinese car brand market data diagram 2026

Market Share Shift Accelerates for Chinese Car Brands

Chinese car brands now hold 29.9 percent of Panama’s new vehicle market, up from 24.5 percent a year ago. In July alone, that figure climbed to 30.8 percent, meaning nearly one in three new cars leaving Panamanian dealerships now carries a Chinese badge. Twenty Chinese brands appear in ADAP’s ranking, and sixteen of them sold more units than last year.

Geely leads the Chinese contingent with 1,820 units sold through July, making it the fourth best-selling brand in the entire country. Jetour and Changan follow, posting the fastest growth rates in the full ranking at 37.6 percent and 45.1 percent respectively. Among the top twelve Chinese brands, only GAC Motor and Forthing sold fewer vehicles than in 2025.

Consumer Complaint Data Reveals Uneven After-Sales Performance

The sales surge has not translated into uniform customer satisfaction. Data from Acodeco, Panama’s consumer protection authority, shows significant variation in complaint rates among Chinese car brands. Changan records 8.4 complaints per 1,000 units sold, while GAC Motor posts 12.5, compared to 2.2 for Toyota and a market average of 5.4.

acodeco

Not all Chinese brands underperform on this metric. Geely registers 3.8 complaints per 1,000 units and Jetour 4.7, both below the market average but still above Toyota’s benchmark. Dongfeng and Kaiyi, which grew 89.2 percent and 52.5 percent respectively, do not appear in Acodeco’s complaint registry at all. Roughly three out of four complaints about new vehicles relate to warranty issues, underscoring the importance of understanding coverage terms and authorized service network availability before purchase.

What the Numbers Mean for Panamanian Buyers

The rapid expansion of Chinese car brands has transformed the entry-level segment, where first-time buyers shop. With sixteen Chinese brands growing year-over-year, the options available in showrooms have broadened considerably. Price competition has intensified, but the data suggests buyers should look beyond window stickers.

Geely Haoyue 2023 By User3204 – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=134524459

ADAP’s August sales report has not yet been released, and Acodeco updates its complaint statistics on September 20.
