A new Darien jungle exhibition opened Saturday at the Panama Canal Museum<\/a>, presenting more than 60 works by Panamanian artist Isabel de Obald\u00eda that reinterpret the region’s early colonial history<\/a> through maps, chronicles, and archival documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition, titled “Mar Tenebroso. Selva Indomable” (Dark Sea, Untamed Jungle), occupies the museum’s top floor and focuses on the period when Spanish explorers first arrived<\/a> in Tierra Firme<\/a> and established Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua del Dari\u00e9n<\/a>, the first European settlement on the American mainland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historical Research Fuels the Darien Jungle Exhibition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

De Obald\u00eda built the collection from an extensive investigation into the Dari\u00e9n’s past, drawing on historical texts, cartographic archives, and materials held by the Canal Museum<\/a> itself. The works connect to the territory of Semaco and the indigenous leader C\u00e9maco, whose resistance to Spanish colonization shaped the region’s early narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist’s approach combines visual art with documentary research, offering visitors a pathway into the complex stories that have defined the Dari\u00e9n over centuries. Rather than presenting a linear historical account, the exhibition invites multiple interpretations of the region’s contested past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
