A violent attack on a teacher in La Chorrera has intensified national concern over school violence prevention and exposed what education officials describe as a deepening mental health emergency affecting students, parents, and educators across Panama. Minister of Education Ventura Vega Osorio addressed the broader implications of such incidents, connecting them directly to a nationwide mental health problem. “We have a serious problem in this country, which is mental health. Very serious,” Vega Osorio said [Translated from Spanish].

Recent surveys cited by the minister reveal alarming statistics among Panamanian youth. Approximately 72 percent of young people report experiencing anxiety, while three out of ten adolescents between ages 15 and 19 are classified as obese. These figures underscore the complex factors driving aggressive behavior in educational settings.

The minister emphasized that mental health struggles extend beyond students to include parents and teachers themselves. The Ministry of Education plans to strengthen psychopedagogical support offices and parent training programs as part of its response strategy.

Details of the La Chorrera Attack and Prior Incidents

The mother involved in Tuesday’s attack told authorities that after the midday confrontation with the teacher, she returned home, changed clothes, and came back to the school armed with a baseball bat. She then confronted the educator, striking him on the legs and arms. As the teacher tried to escape in his car, a second assailant intervened, landing additional blows and attempting to pull him from the vehicle.

School administrators at JMB confirmed that the teacher had been transferred months earlier from the Rubiano Institute following allegations that he had threatened to strike the school’s principal. This history raises questions about staff placement protocols and whether adequate support systems were in place.
