Demolition crews began tearing down the La Pitaloza school in Los Pozos district<\/a>, Herrera province<\/a>, on October 24, marking the first physical reconstruction effort after the magnitude 7.5 earthquake that struck Panama on October 9. The earthquake damage schools<\/a> sustained across the country forced education officials to close hundreds of facilities, with 35 campuses declared total losses and 619 others requiring some level of repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Education<\/a> (Meduca) confirmed that work will start this week on 40 additional schools with structural damage<\/a>. These projects represent the opening phase of a wider rehabilitation program aimed at restoring safe learning environments for thousands of students in the central provinces hardest hit by the seismic event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
