After intercepting and inspecting the boat, authorities found the captured marine life along with equipment used for freediving extraction.

The inventory recorded 21 spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus), six queen conch (Lobatus gigas), and six octopuses (Octopus sp.). Of the lobsters, 14 were dead and seven were alive. All six conch survived, but all six octopuses had died.

To minimize ecological damage, rangers released the seven live lobsters and six live conch back into their natural habitat. The 14 dead lobsters were transferred to the National Police on Isla Colón for processing.

<img decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://expat-times.com/panama/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/03d453eb-a9a5-4aa3-b696-eb037b0d8a20-16-9-aspect-ratio-1600w-0-1200x800-1.webp" alt="Illegal Queen conch. Illegal extraction of lobsters and conch has been a persistent challenge in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, where artisanal fishing pressure often overlaps with protected boundaries.

The presence of a minor aboard the vessel adds a social dimension to the enforcement action. Authorities indicated that this aspect requires verification, as child involvement in fishing activities raises additional legal and welfare considerations under Panamanian law.

MiAMBIENTE emphasized that surveillance and enforcement operations are essential for protecting biodiversity and conserving the country’s marine ecosystems. The agency continues to coordinate with police units to patrol high-risk areas within the park system, particularly during seasonal closures and breeding periods for commercially valuable species like the queen conch.

Panamanian authorities intercepted a small vessel carrying 33 illegally harvested marine organisms inside a protected national park in Bocas del Toro on October 25, 2026.
