Panama City’s public transport payment infrastructure has undergone a major digital overhaul<\/a>, with more than 4 million transit cards<\/a> and their balances migrated to a modern cloud platform<\/a>. The transition, completed September 9, 2026, also involved replacing 3,500 validators across the Metro and MiBus networks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SONDA, the company managing the system, released details to address user questions and counter misinformation circulating about the update. The new platform centralizes account data, changing how riders protect and recover their funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every existing MetroBus and Metro<\/a> card required transfer to the new infrastructure, a process completed before the announcement. SONDA emphasized that user funds and personal information are stored securely in the cloud. This architecture removes reliance on physical card data, meaning the card itself no longer holds the monetary value. Instead, the balance lives on centralized servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To qualify for balance recovery, riders must have registered their card online before the loss occurs. Once registered, the balance functions similarly to a bank account. The funds remain protected even if the physical card disappears, allowing users to transfer the balance to a replacement card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
