PANAMA CITY, Panama – The Land Transit and Transport Authority (ATTT), in collaboration with Sertracen Panama, has officially launched a newly designed physical driver’s license featuring an advanced QR code for instant verification. The initiative, announced this week, marks a significant step in Panama’s efforts to modernize its identification documents and enhance road security by integrating international-standard anti-fraud technology.
The updated license incorporates sophisticated security features designed to provide greater confidence for both drivers and traffic authorities. The central innovation is a scannable QR code that allows for the immediate authentication of the document, significantly reducing the potential for forgery. This update is part of a broader modernization and strengthening of road and documentary security, aligning with global identification standards.
Official Statements on Security and Modernization
Officials from both the ATTT and Sertracen Panama have emphasized the national and security benefits of the new document. They highlighted that the design not only improves functionality but also incorporates cultural elements representative of the nation.
“With this update, we take a step forward towards a safer and more modern identification system, aligned with international standards and with a design that represents our culture and nation,” said Simón Henríquez, director of the ATTT [Translated from Spanish].
Jorge Villamizar, General Manager of Sertracen Panama, echoed this sentiment, positioning Panama as a country keeping pace with global advancements. He also provided practical guidance for the public regarding the rollout.
“Panama remains updated with the latest standards in identification worldwide,” affirmed Jorge Villamizar [Translated from Spanish]. He recommended that drivers “stay tuned to official channels to know when the new format will be available in each province, starting November 2025.”
Phased National Implementation Plan
The issuance of the new license model will begin at the Sertracen branch in Plaza Carolina. From there, it will be extended in a staggered manner to other branches across the country. This phased approach is designed to ensure a smooth transition to the new system without overwhelming administrative centers.
Drivers will be able to obtain the new license when they complete procedures for a first-time issuance, renewal, or duplicate. A key point of clarification from the authorities is that current licenses will remain valid until their expiration date, preventing any urgent need for mass replacement and allowing for a natural renewal cycle.
The primary goals of this document overhaul are to substantially reduce the risk of counterfeiting, improve digital verification processes for law enforcement, and ultimately reinforce overall road safety in Panama.
