A fast moving fire completely destroyed a large residential and commercial building in the city of Colón, Panama on Thursday. The blaze started on the upper floor of the structure on Calle 12 Domingo Díaz and rapidly spread, forcing dozens of residents to flee without their belongings.
Firefighters from multiple stations responded to the emergency. They worked for hours to contain the flames, which fully consumed the building’s upper section and severely damaged ground floor businesses. Officials from the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) and the National Police also arrived to secure the area and manage the crisis.
Residents Escape But Lose Everything
Initial reports from residents indicate a miraculous escape for all occupants. Everyone inside managed to get out before the fire intensified. No missing or trapped persons have been reported, a fact authorities called fortunate given the fire’s speed.
More than fifteen families lived in the building. They watched as the structure, and all their possessions inside, were consumed. A small supermarket and a dry cleaner operating on the ground floor also suffered total losses. Witnesses said the fire started without warning and expanded too quickly for anyone to salvage anything.

The regional fire chief for Colón personally coordinated the Firefighting operation on site. He confirmed the focus was first on containing the blaze and ensuring no lives were at risk. At least five fire trucks battled the inferno, with crews from all area stations activated to assist.
Gas Tank Explosion Complicates Firefighting Efforts
The situation grew more dangerous during the response. Firefighters reported a gas tank explosion inside the building. This sudden blast significantly increased the risk for emergency personnel working to control the fire.
Crews persisted despite the hazardous conditions. Their efforts prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings in the dense urban neighborhood. The cause of the initial fire remains under investigation by relevant authorities.
With the fire extinguished, the focus now shifts to damage assessment and victim assistance. Structural engineers must evaluate the integrity of the gutted building’s remains. The process to provide aid to the displaced families has begun, according to SINAPROC officials.
These families face starting over with nothing. Community organizations and government agencies are expected to coordinate relief efforts in the coming days. The full extent of the financial loss is still being calculated, but early estimates suggest it will be substantial for both residents and business owners.
