Search teams recovered the body of a missing French tourist on Sunday afternoon near Santa Catalina in Panama. The National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) located the man after a multi-agency search operation spanning more than a day along the Pacific coast.
The tourist was reported missing on the morning of Saturday, April 4 from El Estero beach. Officials immediately activated search and rescue protocols for the area, which is part of the southern Province of Veraguas. His body was found around 4:15 p.m. the following day near Isla Cébaco.
Intensive Coastal Search Operation
Responders from several agencies combed the coastline. The effort included eight members of the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), six firefighters, and National Police agents. Community residents also actively assisted in the search.
The operation expanded significantly with aerial and maritime support. The National Aeronaval Service (Panama) conducted land and sea patrols while monitoring the broader zone. This allowed teams to widen their search radius between Gobernadora Island and the popular surf destination of santa catalina.
“Following this regrettable tragedy, SINAPROC provided psychological support to the tourist’s family through a volunteer specialist in this area.” [Translated from Spanish]
Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased. They are focusing on supporting the family and investigating the precise circumstances that led to the disappearance.
Authorities Issue Safety Warning
The discovery followed a weekend of hazardous sea conditions. A prevention advisory for strong swells was in effect across Panama’s Pacific coast. Officials cited a “mar de fondo,” or ground swell, creating dangerous waves.
In their statements, authorities reiterated calls for public caution. They urged residents and tourists to maintain preventive measures, especially when facing rough ocean conditions. The incident highlights the risks present even in well-known tourist areas.
This type of inter-agency response is standard for missing persons cases in coastal regions. The servicio nacional aeronaval often provides critical air and sea assets during such emergencies. Their involvement was pivotal in covering the extensive search area.
An investigation into the tourist’s death is now underway. Local police will work with forensic authorities to determine the official cause.
