Construction crews have completed the underground tunnel connection for the Panama Metro Line 3 project, physically linking Panama Oeste with the capital city for the first time. Carlos Cedeño, the project director, confirmed the breakthrough occurred behind a retaining wall that had separated the two tunnel sections, marking the end of major excavation work under the Panama Canal.
The milestone clears the way for installation of rail tracks and electromechanical systems required to move trains between Line 1 and the new Line 3 network. Cedeño said sequential testing will follow once those components are in place, with the goal of ensuring safe and reliable operations before passenger service begins.

Panama Metro Line 3 Tunnel Breakthrough Details
The connection represents a critical engineering achievement for the project, which required tunneling beneath the Panama Canal. Cedeño noted that the technical challenges were substantial but were overcome through the combined efforts of Panamanian professionals and international advisors.
“Today this stage ends in which we already have a direct connection, behind this wall that is here at our backs, that is the connection between the West and the Capital City that will allow us to begin the work necessary to make train circulation possible” [Translated from Spanish]
With excavation now complete, crews will focus on laying the running rails and installing electrical, signaling, and ventilation equipment throughout the tunnel segment. These systems must be fully operational before test trains can pass through the crossing.

Testing Schedule and Tunnel Boring Machine Fate
Test runs will expand progressively along the alignment, eventually reaching Albrook station and the interchange point with Line 3. Cedeño explained that the phased approach allows engineers to verify each system segment before extending operations further along the corridor.
Regarding the tunnel boring machine used to dig beneath the canal, Cedeño said extraction will occur once the excavation process formally concludes. The contract includes specific provisions for the machine’s final destination, with the Panama Canal Authority among the parties involved in that decision.
Project Timeline and Regional Impact
The Panama Metro Line 3 project aims to dramatically improve mobility for thousands of daily commuters traveling between Panama Oeste and the capital. The line will integrate with the existing Line 1 network, creating a unified rail system that spans both sides of the canal.
Cedeño confirmed that inauguration remains scheduled for late 2028. The tunnel connection positions the project to transition from heavy civil construction into systems installation and commissioning, a phase that typically requires several years to complete for a project of this scale.
The underground link also resolves one of the project’s most complex logistical challenges, as all subsequent work can now proceed without the constraints imposed by active tunneling operations. Officials view the connection as foundational for the broader integration of Panama’s expanding metro network.
