The Ministry of Public Works has begun emergency inspections and cleaning operations on multiple elevated roadways in Panama City, with crews prioritizing vehicle bridge maintenance at the USMA overpass starting Monday. Drivers should expect alternating one-way traffic flow in five-minute intervals near Universidad Católica Santa María La Antigua, affecting routes toward Los Libertadores and Betania.
Work will continue through Tuesday, officials confirmed. The ministry advised motorists to plan for significant delays during peak hours and consider alternate routes where possible.

Scope of Vehicle Bridge Maintenance Inspections
Beyond the USMA structure, assessments now cover eight additional overpasses across the capital district. These include the Paraíso, Villa Lucre, Brisas del Golf, Los Pueblos, San Antonio, Las Acacias, and Asamblea Nacional bridges. Crews are also examining the crossing at Martín Sosa Avenue and the Transístmica highway.
The inspections aim to identify structural wear, drainage issues, and surface damage requiring immediate repair. Ministry engineers are documenting conditions before recommending specific interventions for each location.

Traffic Management and Driver Impact
At the USMA site, flaggers are controlling alternating vehicle passage to allow inspection crews safe access. Each direction receives roughly five minutes of movement before traffic switches, creating backups during morning and evening commutes.
No full closures have been announced for the other eight structures. But the ministry warned that additional lane restrictions could follow once inspection results determine repair priorities.

Infrastructure Safety Push in Panama City
The coordinated evaluation reflects growing concern over aging elevated roadways in the metropolitan area. Several overpasses date back decades and have received only patchwork repairs in recent years.
Officials have not released a timeline for completing all nine assessments. Repair contracts will likely follow a priority ranking based on structural urgency and daily traffic volume. For now, drivers should monitor official updates and prepare for intermittent lane reductions across multiple corridors.
