Panama will host a nationwide donation drive this weekend to support independent animal rescuers and shelters. The “Donatón for Homeless Animals” event takes place on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19 across all provinces.
Organizers hope to collect 15,000 kilograms of pet food and essential supplies. The drive directly assists volunteers who provide food and veterinary care for hundreds of rescued street animals.
Supporting Grassroots Rescue Networks
More than 100 collection centers will operate in supermarkets and pet stores nationwide. The main event hub is the Omar Park dome in Panama City, open from 9 a.m. on Sunday. Donations will fund medical treatments and a critical animal sterilization campaign aiming to fix 500 stray animals.
Event coordinator Maria Fernandez explained the drive’s urgency.
“These independent rescuers operate with immense personal sacrifice, often using their own limited resources. This national effort is a vital lifeline for their mission of compassion.” [Translated from Spanish]
Accepted items include dry or wet food, cat litter, leashes, cleaning supplies, and unused medication. People can also sponsor individual sterilization procedures.
A Growing Response to Animal Welfare
Since its 2019 inception, the Donatón has sterilized over 2,500 animals and gathered more than 105,500 kilograms of food. It now supports over 150 independent rescuers and foundations throughout Panama.
Beyond collecting supplies, the weekend will feature adoption fairs and educational workshops for pet owners. This reflects a broader push for responsible ownership and reducing the stray population humanely.
National Environmental Protection Agency director Carlos Rodriguez endorsed the public’s role.
“Sustainable change requires community participation. Every donation, whether food or funds for a surgery, directly prevents suffering and overpopulation.” [Translated from Spanish]
For those unable to visit a center, electronic donations are possible via a dedicated Banco General account. The official website, donatonpanama.org, lists all drop-off locations and sponsorship details.
The event highlights the critical work of local animal rescue networks. Many rescuers face constant financial strain. This annual drive provides a coordinated boost to their daily efforts.
Public engagement with animal welfare issues appears to be rising in the country. For more on recent developments in Panama, you can read about other civic actions. The Donatón’s continued growth suggests a deepening societal commitment to addressing animal homelessness.
