Panama will host the Organization of American States General Assembly from June 20 to 27. The event carries a price tag of nearly 15 million dollars. Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez confirmed the investment this week.
The gathering will bring together 86 delegations and five regional presidents. Expenses cover hotels, transportation, security, food, logistics, communications, and translation services. The foreign minister estimated the economic spillover could reach two and a half to three times the amount invested. “We have worked on this organization for more than six months,” Martínez-Acha Vásquez said. Officials expect more than 2,500 participants. That number includes foreign ministers, diplomatic representatives, business leaders, and media professionals. Five heads of state have confirmed attendance so far. President José Raúl Mulino will lead the inauguration ceremony.

Diplomatic Turnout and Historical Significance
The confirmed list includes one vice president, 35 foreign ministers, 10 cabinet ministers, 13 deputy ministers, and 113 permanent representative ambassadors. Eight international organizations will also send support teams. Martínez-Acha stated these numbers reflect international confidence in Panama. He said the country now serves as a diplomatic platform for regional and hemispheric dialogue.
“These figures show the trust the international community places in Panama. They consolidate our nation as a diplomatic platform for regional dialogue,” said Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez. [Translated from Spanish]
This marks the 56th session of the OAS General Assembly. Panama has hosted the event twice before, in 1996 and 2007. The country now stands as a recurring venue for this regional forum.
Parallel meetings will take place throughout the week. A Global Leaders Forum will address democracy, security, development, sustainability, innovation, and multilateralism. Deputy Minister Carlos Guevara Mann said topics will include Venezuela’s situation, democracy, and strengthening republican systems.

June 22 Ceremony and Historic Document Transfer
A solemn session of heads of state and government is scheduled for June 22. This event commemorates the bicentennial of the Congress of Panama, one of the most significant diplomatic gatherings in the week’s agenda. The official installation of the OAS General Assembly will follow. Secretary General of the OAS and President Mulino will deliver speeches.
Brazil will officially transfer the original acts of the Congress of Panama to Panama. This symbolic ceremony takes place in the Congress Hall. It represents a major moment in the bicentennial commemoration.
The event’s theme is “America United in the Bicentennial of the Amphictyonic Congress of Panama.” A conference titled “Future of Multilateralism in the Americas” will feature the current OAS secretary general and former secretaries. A private meeting between heads of state will occur from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
A dialogue between the OAS, civil society, and the private sector runs from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Foreign ministers will arrive at the Bolivar Palace at 5:30 p.m. The opening session of the 56th OAS General Assembly begins shortly after.
Security preparations are extensive. Logistics teams have coordinated transportation routes and hotel accommodations for months. Translation services will operate in multiple languages throughout all sessions.
Panama’s government views this investment as strategic. The economic return could reach 45 million dollars based on the minister’s estimates. Hotels, restaurants, and local businesses stand to benefit significantly from the influx of international visitors.
The Organization of American States General Assembly represents the hemisphere’s primary political forum. Panama’s role as host reinforces its position as a diplomatic hub. The bicentennial commemoration adds historical weight to this year’s proceedings.
