The public transport operator MiBus has launched a special recruitment call for women aged 25 and over in Panama City. The company seeks new electric bus drivers and maintenance staff as it prepares to expand its fleet. This initiative aims to strengthen female participation in a sector traditionally dominated by men.
Company officials said the drive responds directly to the imminent arrival of a new fleet of electric buses. The modernization effort creates immediate job opportunities for women interested in joining the city’s transit modernization. MiBus currently employs about 300 women as bus operators, a number it hopes to significantly increase with this campaign.
“We are making a very special call for women who want to come and participate, to belong to the MiBus family, because we are going to receive a new fleet of electric buses, and we want to invite women to accompany us on this adventure,” said Eliana Lasso, MiBus Director of Service Planning. The first of the new vehicles are expected to arrive soon. Lasso confirmed the company anticipates receiving between 55 and 60 new electric buses. This expansion will require a larger workforce to operate and maintain the zero-emission vehicles.
Experienced Operator Shares Insight on the Job
Karelyn Delgado, a MiBus driver with seven years of experience, shared details about her daily routine. She explained that her work involves passenger transport across various routes with rotating schedules. Each shift begins with a thorough vehicle inspection before starting her route.
Delgado also highlighted the comprehensive training MiBus provides. The program includes technical instruction for driving the large vehicles, emotional management techniques, and customer service tools. This training prepares new hires for the demands of urban transit operations.
“Every morning I get up, start my shift, come in, check the bus, and then go to transport the users. The routes vary, every day is something different and the hours are rotating,” Delgado said. [Translated from Spanish]
Expanding Women’s Role in Public Transport
MiBus hopes to invite approximately 100 additional women to join its team through this effort. The company views increasing gender diversity as a key component of its growth strategy. Integrating more women into operational roles represents a shift for Panama’s public transport landscape.
Interested candidates can apply by taking their resume to any MiBus branch office. They may also submit their information via email to quierotrabajar@mibus.com.pa. The call is specifically for women 25 years of age or older who are interested in driving or maintenance careers.
This recruitment push aligns with broader global trends in transit electrification and workforce diversification. The new electric buses will contribute to reducing urban emissions in the capital city. Officials see the moment as a unique opportunity to transform both the fleet and its workforce simultaneously.
