The Archdiocese of Panama has formally opened the Panama beatification cause for Father Guillermo Sosa Icaza after receiving official clearance from the Vatican. The Dicastery for the Causes of Saints issued a “nihil obstat” through Protocol No. 3863-1 26, confirming no impediment exists to advance the process for the Panamanian priest now designated as a Servant of God.
Archbishop José Domingo Ulloa Mendieta signed the edict announcing the decision, which authorizes the local Church to begin the diocesan phase of investigation into the life, virtues, and pastoral legacy of Father Sosa Icaza. The announcement was made public on January 11, 2026.

Panama Beatification Cause Moves to Diocesan Phase
With Vatican approval secured, the Archdiocese will now establish commissions and appoint experts responsible for conducting historical, documentary, and testimonial investigations. These efforts must follow canonical norms established by the Catholic Church for beatification and canonization processes.
The edict calls on anyone who knew the priest or possesses documents, writings, or testimonies
to his life and ministry to cooperate with the designated authorities. Church officials stressed that such contributions will help clarify the facts surrounding his legacy. Once canonical requirements are fulfilled, the Archdiocese will formally announce the opening of the diocesan investigation.

Call for Witnesses and Documentation
Archbishop Ulloa invited priests, deacons, consecrated religious, and lay faithful across the archdiocese to accompany the process with prayer and prudence. He emphasized respect for the discernment carried out by ecclesiastical authorities throughout the proceedings.
“This cause represents an opportunity to strengthen faith and remember that holiness is a universal vocation, also present in the history and reality of Panama” [Translated from Spanish]
The archbishop entrusted the process to Santa María la Antigua, the patroness of Panama. The initiative marks a significant moment for the Panamanian Church, as it seeks to recognize a local figure whose life may serve as a model of sanctity for the faithful in the country and beyond.
Significance for the Panamanian Church
The beatification and canonization process involves multiple stages, beginning with the diocesan investigation into the candidate’s life and virtues. If the local phase concludes positively, documentation is forwarded to Rome for further review. Approval at each stage depends on rigorous examination of evidence and verification of any reported miracles attributed to the candidate’s intercession.
For Panama, this cause represents a rare opportunity to elevate a native priest to the altars of the Catholic Church. The Archdiocese has not announced a timeline for the diocesan phase, but officials indicated that the formation of investigative commissions will proceed according to established canonical procedures.
