Panamanian authorities intercepted a vessel carrying 1,148 packages of suspected narcotics south of Jicaron Island in Veraguas province, the National Aeronaval Service (Senan) confirmed Friday. Three crew members were detained during the maritime operation in the Western Pacific.
The seizure pushes Senan’s annual tally to 62,083 packages of illicit substances recovered through 97 operations across the country this year. The Jicaron Island drugs bust represents one of the largest single interdictions in recent weeks.

Jicaron Island Drugs Operation Details
Aeronaval agents conducting routine maritime surveillance spotted a suspicious boat with three people aboard. When officers intercepted the vessel, they found evidence suggesting it carried illegal cargo. The boat, its occupants, and the suspected shipment were transported to the Quebrada de Piedra Aeronaval Station.
Prosecutors from the Veraguas Drug Prosecutor’s Office coordinated the subsequent search and registration procedures. Authorities tallied 1,148 packages at the station, though laboratory confirmation of the substance remains pending. Senan also secured the fast boat used in the suspected trafficking operation.

Escudo Protector Strategy and Regional Impact
The interception falls under Operation Escudo Protector, a national security framework designed to counter drug trafficking and transnational organized crime. Senan has intensified patrols along Panama’s Pacific coast, a known corridor for narcotics moving north from South America.
Panama’s strategic position between cocaine-producing regions and consumer markets has made its waters a frequent transit zone. Maritime interdictions account for a significant portion of the country’s annual drug seizures, with the Pacific coast serving as a primary interception point.
Annual Enforcement Numbers Climb
The 62,083 packages seized so far in 2026 reflect sustained operational tempo across multiple regions. Senan’s 97 operations span both Caribbean and Pacific waters, though the Western Pacific near Veraguas has proven particularly active.
Officials continue to process the three detainees while awaiting forensic analysis of the seized packages. The investigation remains open as authorities work to trace the vessel’s origin and intended destination.
