Panama received 60 tons of German humanitarian aid late Wednesday night at Tocumen International Airport, a delivery aimed at supporting communities still recovering from the October 9 earthquake that struck the country. The shipment arrived aboard a direct flight from Berlin carrying Germany’s Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who was welcomed by Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez.
The cargo includes 1,000 water purification filters, 780 cooking sets, 900 waterproof tarps, 512 blankets, and 822 camp beds. These supplies are designated for families whose basic needs remain unmet nearly three weeks after the seismic event.

Bilateral Meeting Agenda and Diplomatic Schedule
Wadephul’s arrival marks the first visit by a German foreign minister to Panama since President Frank-Walter Steinmeier became the first German head of state to visit the country seven months ago. Martínez-Acha Vásquez made an official trip to Berlin one year ago, reflecting a pattern of intensified diplomatic exchange between the two nations.
On Thursday, the two foreign ministers will hold a working meeting at the Palacio Bolívar, followed by a joint press conference. Wadephul is also scheduled to meet with President José Raúl Mulino. Discussions are expected to cover protection of maritime routes, including the Panama Canal, for international navigation and commerce.
German Humanitarian Aid Strengthens Bilateral Cooperation
During the reception, Martínez-Acha Vásquez emphasized that the donation represents a significant step in bilateral cooperation.

he said.
Wadephul recalled his immediate communication with Panamanian authorities upon learning the magnitude of the emergency.
“We stand with you. I remember perfectly the day the earthquake occurred. We have been in direct contact” [Translated from Spanish]
the German minister stated. He highlighted the close friendship between both countries, now expressed through humanitarian cooperation addressing post-earthquake needs.

Earthquake Impact and Regional Recovery Efforts
The October 9 earthquake prompted evacuations in coastal communities, including Isla Cañas, where residents continue awaiting responses regarding potential relocation. The German aid shipment supplements ongoing national relief efforts, providing essential shelter and water treatment capacity to affected households.
The delivery underscores Germany’s commitment to disaster response partnerships in Central America, while advancing Panama’s diplomatic ties with Europe’s largest economy. The bilateral agenda extends beyond immediate humanitarian concerns to include long-term security cooperation on global trade infrastructure.
