Two men, including a state bus driver, were arrested Monday after police caught them siphoning fuel from a government-owned bus in the Albrook sector of Panama City. The suspected fuel theft Panama incident unfolded near the old Modular Hospital grounds, close to Albrook Mall, according to the National Police.
Officers on a routine patrol spotted the pair using a hose to drain diesel from the vehicle’s tank into several standalone containers. Both suspects were taken into custody at the scene. The fuel, hose, containers, and other evidence were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Fuel Theft Panama Patrol Interrupts Siphoning Operation
Police units were conducting preventive surveillance in the area when they noticed the two citizens manipulating a hose connected to the state bus. The driver and his companion were allegedly filling multiple receptacles with fuel extracted directly from the vehicle.
Agents intervened immediately upon recognizing what was happening. Authorities confirmed both individuals were apprehended in flagrante delicto, meaning they were caught in the act of committing the crime. The National Police stated that such patrols are part of broader efforts to safeguard public assets from exactly this kind of misuse.

Evidence Transferred to Judicial Authorities
Following the arrests, the two men and all collected evidence were handed over to the competent judicial authority. Prosecutors will now determine formal charges and legal responsibilities. The case proceeds through Panama’s standard due process framework.
Police did not disclose the total volume of fuel allegedly extracted before the intervention. Officials also withheld the specific state institution that owns the bus and any statements the suspects made after being detained. Those details remain under review as investigators build the case file.

Ongoing Crackdown on Public Resource Misuse
This arrest aligns with heightened vigilance around state transportation assets in Panama. Fuel theft from public vehicles has long been a concern for transit authorities, given the financial drain it places on operational budgets. Incidents like the one at Albrook highlight the vulnerability of fleet vehicles parked in less-monitored zones.
Authorities emphasized that preventive patrols will continue across high-risk areas. The goal is to deter similar crimes before significant quantities of fuel disappear. For now, the two suspects await a hearing while forensic teams document the evidence recovered from the scene.
