Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino will not travel to Toronto for the country’s debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He confirmed the decision this week from Arraiján, Panama Oeste. The president said he wants to stay with Panamanian fans on home soil.
Mulino explained that like the vast majority of Panamanians, he prefers to remain in the country. He wants to support the “Marea Roja” from national territory instead of attending the match in a formal capacity. The president plans to join public celebrations backing the Panama national football team.

Government Provides Giant Screens Across the Country
The government will set up giant television screens in multiple locations so fans can watch the games together. Confirmed sites include Parque Omar in Panama City, Atlapa, Tocumen, Panama Oeste, Chitré, Santiago, Colón and David. These spaces will allow supporters to enjoy every match of the Panamanian team.
Panama faces Ghana on Wednesday, June 17 at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada. That match marks the country’s World Cup debut. President Mulino stressed his choice reflects a desire to share the World Cup excitement with ordinary citizens rather than attending through official protocol.

The president promised his full support for the national team from within Panama’s borders. His announcement comes as excitement builds across the country for the tournament. Many Panamanians plan to gather at the designated viewing points to cheer together.
Mulino’s decision marks a notable shift from typical diplomatic attendance at major sporting events. He wants to experience the World Cup alongside everyday fans. The government expects large crowds at all viewing locations.
Security preparations are underway for the public screenings. Officials will coordinate with local authorities to ensure safe environments for families and supporters. The matches represent a historic moment for Panama’s football program.
